The idea to run diesel engines using fuel based on vegetable oils is as old as the diesel engine itself. But it’s in the last ten years, with rises in fossil fuel prices along with changes in EU governments’ policies that have encouraged the use of biodiesel, both as the sole component of the fuel, or as a blend with fossil-fuel diesel.

Biodiesel

Fuel Ethanol
In the USA, ADM is at the forefront of fuel ethanol production using in-house maize-derived carbohydrates for the fermentation process. There too, ethanol is being developed as an oxygen source in diesel fuels.
