A RICH TRADITION OF GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITIES
ADM’s birthplace 105 years ago was Minneapolis, Minnesota, but since then the list of ADM communities has grown to include places we call home in 60 countries. We work to be a responsible citizen in each one by providing jobs, paying taxes and participating as financial sponsors and volunteers in projects that make these communities better places in which to live, work and do business.
Forging strong, mutually rewarding bonds with the people and places where we do business has been a hallmark of ADM’s culture since our founding more than a century ago, and our commitment continues to grow with each passing year.
Our support takes several forms, from direct contributions and grants, to matching gifts, to employee volunteerism. During our 2008 fiscal year, ADM contributed nearly $10 million to various civic and charitable causes in our operating communities worldwide, including groups working to eradicate hunger and improve education. We also worked to cultivate the next generation of farmers through National FFA Organization scholarships and our sponsorship of farm-safety programs for children.
ADM CARES
Beginning in fiscal 2009, ADM will further strengthen our corporate-giving strategy with the launch of ADM Cares. ADM Cares will target 1% of pretax earnings to investments to support safe, responsible and environmentally sound agricultural practices in critical growing regions in South America, North America, West Africa and Southeast Asia. These investments will promote:
-
health and safety programs for farm workers and children who live on farms;
-
responsible use of agricultural chemicals;
-
sustainable farming practices; and
-
rehabilitation and preservation of environmentally sensitive lands.
At the local level, we will continue to support educational initiatives for children and young adults and other programs that build vibrant communities. ADM employees, meanwhile, will direct a substantial portion of our social investment and volunteer activity through our Colleague Giving Council, which will also coordinate our in-kind food donations and community volunteer program.
